A growing population and rapid weather changes are causing issues with the food supply all over the country. While we have been producing an abundance of food for decades, enough to feed the entire world if managed properly, many food experts see us approaching the peak of our food production.

Solutions to this global food crisis will begin in every community’s backyard. Small scale food production in the home will help to ease the food shortage and local hunger that threatens to overwhelm many. There are many ways to ensure that you will be protected from the coming food crisis, and here is the top four.

Start a Small Farm

Being able to produce your own food will become necessary for survival in the future just as it used to be. If you do not know how to grow or raise your own food it is easy to start with small gardens of herbs and tomatoes in the beginning. Slowly expand what you have and what you are able to do until you have grown sufficiently.

This is not a task that is difficult regardless of where you live. While open pastures and large plots of lands are the most fruitful, urban farms have been taking off in the last decade. You can create an entire functioning farm in a small plot of land with chickens and bees alongside your vegetables and fruits. If you do not know where to start, check in with your local co-op or gardening association to get assistance. They can also suggest good community gardens if you don’t feel as though you have the space necessary.

Learn to Preserve Your Food

Preserving your food is a time-honored tradition that takes very little time as long as you plan well. You can focus on canning, pickling, or dehydrating foods to see how it feels for you. While there are many tools that will help you during this process, you can either try it out with someone who is more experienced in preservation or try it in your home.

For instance, dehydrating foods is easier in a dehydrator but you can also set your oven to 200 degrees F and have delicious dehydrated apples within eight hours.
